pine marten

The Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) has completed the release of 15 pine martens into Dartmoor woodlands.

The animals, related to weasels and otters, were relocated from Scotland.

After spending three days in soft-release pens to acclimate to their new environment, the eight females and seven males were set free.

Conservation manager Ed Parr Ferris said: “These rare mammals need our help to return to their former homes in the South West, but we also need their help to bring back the natural balance of wildlife to our woodlands.”

Each pine marten was fitted with a radio collar to track their movements, DWT said.

Mr. Parr Ferris noted that extensive consultations were held with local communities before the release.

He said: “We have a team of staff that can go out and work with landowners, farmers, the shoot community, etc, to make sure this project can work along side them.”

The conservation group plans to reuse the enclosures for a similar release in Exmoor, scheduled for 2025. This is part of ongoing efforts to reintroduce the species to southern England.
