A groundbreaking project aimed at boosting golden eagle populations in southern Scotland is at risk of being shut down due to a funding shortfall.

The South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project (SSGEP) announced it needs to raise £400,000 to secure its long-term future.

Since its launch in August 2018, the initiative has successfully relocated golden eagles from other parts of the country to a secret location near Moffat. The project has made significant progress, with the number of golden eagles in the region growing from just a handful to nearly 50—the highest population in centuries.

Despite its success, the project has now issued a public appeal for donations to ensure it can continue. Michael Clarke, chair of SSGEP, stressed that securing the necessary funding is “absolutely crucial” for the project’s ongoing efforts.

Project manager Cat Barlow added: “We have great plans to build on and extend our groundbreaking work so that other parts of the UK benefit from the return of golden eagles.

“But we can only do this with public support.

“Our current funding runs out at the end of this year, and we will need to wind down very soon unless we can raise more funds.”

She said every donation could play a “key part” in reversing a biodiversity decline in the UK.

The project has also received support from Springwatch presenter Iolo Williams, who expressed hope that the “exciting” work of restoring golden eagle populations would continue into the future.

“They’re running out of money and need your help,” he said.

“They need to raise that money as soon as possible.”
